Designed to raise awareness and help develop innovative solutions to address the serious overfishing and marine sustainability issues that are increasingly facing the world.
Volunteer coders, technologists, science enthusiasts, and designers spent an exciting weekend collaborating and developing usable solutions to problem statements solicited from fisheries experts around the world. At the end of the hackathon, teams presented their work and an expert panel of judges will nominated the winner, Fillet Finder.
The winner went to team Fillet Finder for their app that used spectral and other characteristics to help consumers identify illegally caught fish at fish retailers. Fillet Finder then went on to compete in a global competition run by the US State Department.
The event was held at the Michael Crouch Innovation Centre at the University of New South Wales (MCIC UNSW).
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) was a sponsor and the judging panel consisted of innovation and startup experts from MCIC UNSW, startup Simply Wall St, GitHub, AFMA and the NSW Department of Primary Industries.
